Summary: On a quest to fulfill his birthright Jaejoong must conqueror more than just the Dark Elf plotting to destroy his city walls, he must also find it in his heart to heal the man broken at his feet. Meanwhile, the brother lost in the shadows must find his inner strength before the one he's destined to love looses his life to the endless pursuit of revenge and despair.

The guard announced their arrival as soon as they had stepped out of the carriage.

Jaejoong had not spoken to his younger brother after his outburst over the task ahead and Changmin was grateful.  He didn't know why, but something about the older man just made him so angry.  At first he thought it was jealousy over a life he could have had, but Changmin had disregarded that idea quickly.  he had a good life in the army, food and companionship, adventure and purpose.  he had all he could ever ask for.  Pity he had thought later.  He pitied his older half-brother for the unloving world he would have had to have grown up in and lived in to make him so focused on pleasing only himself.

Continuing to think on it Changmin followed closely behind the older man as he navigated the hallways as if by instinct, boots clicking on the smooth granite floor.  Changmin's knee-length jacket flowed behind him in the pace they kept, his eyes continuing to dart from wall to wall.  It had been almost ten years since he had last seen these walls and it sent a sudden chill down his spine.

As if out of nowhere a set of large, wooden double doors opened to reveal four of the Dijnn elders and the King; his father.  All of them appeared stern faced, hands clasped in front of them as they sat at a large crescent-moon shaped table.  His father, Chagnmin recognized, was seated at the centre.  He was taken aback by how old his father looked.  Sunken cheeks and tired eyes, it was not the man that Changmin remembered from his childhood.  Once strong and commanding, the man that sat across the room from him was old and frail. Changmin found himself looking harshly towards his older sibling, silently wondering if his father's haggard appearance was somehow Jaejoong's doing.

Unknowingly, the doors were shut with a heavy bang and Changmin almost jumped.

"My sons," the King spoke.  "I'm glad you arrived quickly and safely. Changmin, you have grown into a fine young man since I last saw you.  They tell me you are becoming a fine commander and you have excelled with bow and arrow."

"Thank you father, I have."  Changmin watched the look on Jaejoong's face fall over their father's praise of his accomplishments.

"Jaejoong, I trust you didn't get up to too much trouble while you were away."

"No sir," Jaejoong replied glumly.

"Good.  Well then, let's not waste any time.  You were both summoned here so that Jaejoong's coming of age quest could be explained and initiated.  I am confident that the elders have chosen a task worthy of testing your lineage and manhood my son.  Changmin, I have asked you here because you are the most qualified to accompany Jaejoong on this quest as his bodyguard, as it tradition and his right as the quest bearer.  I have also asked you here because the quest is such that if Jaejoong is successful the elders have agreed to bestow palace honours on your name allowing you to one day serve a General to the King."

All four men surrounding the king nodded in agreement and Changmin swallowed hard.   No pressure he thought.   All I have to do it babysit my dim-witted brother so he doesn't get killed.  No pressure, just the rest of my life on the line.

"Now," the King continued, pulling Changmin from his grumblings.  "Minwoo,if you'd be so kind as to explain the quest the four of you have chosen."

Fumbling with the voluminous folds of his robe the elder struggled to his feet, a small wodden walking stick cradled under one arm to support him as he walked around the far side of the table.  Chagnmin watched Jaejoong bristle as the older man ambled his way in-front of them, the small square of the viewing screen held in the hand not already working the cane for support.

With a hand on the table for balance, Minwoo placed the viewing screen on the smooth silver surface beside where he stood, the image projector immediately turning on and broadcasting a general overview of the territory surrounding the Djinn lands.  Chagnmin could make out clearly the Emerald Sea and the port of Lower Town; the Crystal Mountains that surrounded Sky City.  He could also identify the Uncharted Forests on the opposite sea shore.  Beyond that the map extended to show a large black void, ominous in its inclusion.

"As far back as a year ago rumours of people and creatures vanishing from the boarder lands began to creep into the chatter of the people of Lower Town."  Minwoo began.  "At first we paid no attention, stories concocted of the Uncharted Forests to scare children into not getting lost.  But after some time, and more reports of the missing circulating, I realized that these were not just mere tales of caution.  At Mid-Summer I sent out a scouting party to cross the Emerald Sea and find out what information they could regarding the disppearances.  Only three Djinns in a party of twelve returned."

Changmin's heart clenched, Minwoo looking right at him as he spoke the last sentence.  Changmin had had friends on that mission, friends that had not come back alive.  Images of Kyuhyun and Donghae flooded his mind, the three of them training and eating together.

"From the accounts of the three survivors we were able to learn that the great Dark Elf King has risen to power in the East.  He is attempting to breed an army of modified elves in order to expand his territory and his terror-hold on the people of the Uncharted Regions.  In order to do this he has been abducting those with special abilities and putting them through experiments in order to learn how to meld their abilities with his elves."

"You want me to face a psychotic elf! No way! Siren, Pixie, Warlock, hell, I'll even face a dragon, but I am NOT meeting a psychotic elf." Jaejoong interrupted in a rush of syllables, hands flying around so wildly Changmin had to take a step away from him or be hit.  "Have you ever met a Dark Elf? there are reasons people are terrified of them.  God reasons."

"Silence!" Kangta yelled, slamming his hand down on the table.  "Don't be ridiculous.  I may think you are a spoiled, slef-centered brat who disserves to be punished, but i'm not mad."

"Kangta please," Minwoo sighed.  "We're not sending you to face the Dark Elf King, well not directly.  We have been able to learn that one of the creatures he has taken is a shape shifter, a young one as far as shape shifters age, who has only just come into their powers.  Because of the instability in their shifting it seems the Dark Elf King is on the verge of undertanding how this shifting occures, and once that happens it will take no time at all for him to transfer this ability to his army.  With this kind of power we would be facing a war we couldn't possibly know how to fight."

The image on the table darkened, engulfed in black, until it changed into a detailed map of terrain and villages.

"You're quest Jaejoong is to stop the Dark Elf King from learning this information.  We feel the safest way for you to accomplish this is to follow our network of village alliances until you reach the Dark Boarders.  Once there you will sneak into the castle and rescue the shape shifter, bringing them safely back to Sky City where we will then be able to learn more information and launch an assault against the Dark Elves directly."

Changmin watched as Jaejoong bit his lip, clearly terrified at the prospect of facing such an enemy.  He had to admit he wasn't thrilled with the idea of sneaking into the territory held by the Dark Elves either, let alone having to get back out with a shape shifter who would most likely be tortured half to death.  If he wasn't careful Jeajoong would get him killed and he silently hoped his half-brother had more brains in his head than what he portrayed on a daily basis.

"Do you have any questions about the quest?" the King asked in the growing lull of silence.

"Why are you being so mean to me?" Jaejoong shouted immediatley, and Changmin had to resist the urge to hit him.

"I'm assuming you've accounted for the fact that he Dark Elf King will follow us once he's learned we have the shape shifter," Changmin stepped in before the elders could berate his older sibling again.

"Yes," Chancellor Lee spoke up from behind the table.  "We're hoping that the closest boarder towns will be able to protect you once you've escaped through Dark Elf Lands."

"And if that doesn't happen?"

"Then you will be on your own.  If you are killed the quest will be forfeit, and all our hopes will be lost.  If you cannot secure the shape shifter the Dark Elves will rise, and I fear the age of peace will be over."

"I am assuming we will be outfitted appropriately?  I will not go into battle unprotected."

"Yes Lieutenant," the remaining elder Changmin did not recognize spoke.  "As is required of any quest you will have the necessary tools and weapons need to compete the quest successfully.  The only things you will need to supply yourself will be your strenth, cunning, and courage."

"Very well then," Changmin bowed , pulling Jaejoong down with him by the arm.  "We accept."
